Smart manufacturing: Key driver towards a USD 5 trillion-dollar

New Delhi, October 26, 2018“There are currently two ways to do business in India: ‘Jugaad’, which is effective but not scalable; ‘Dhanda’ an incremental way of doing business; but India needs to push for a third way : ‘Panga’ which is a disruptive way of doing business” said Prof Ashutosh Sharma, Secretary, Department of Science and Technology at the 4th CII Smart Manufacturing Summit, held on 26 October 2018 in New Delhi.

In the opening address, Mr Sunjay J Kapur, Co-Chairman, CII Smart Manufacturing Council and CEO, Sona BLW said, ‘Change is no longer the only constant, disruption is. Flexibility & mass customization is of essence today as customer demands changes constantly. Our responsibility as an Industry is to provide continuous skilling so that jobs continue to flow.’ He further urged industry to take significant steps towards digitalization and aspiring to become an integral part of global supply chains.

Speaking at the Summit, which was attended by more than 300 participants, Prof Sharma emphasized the need for leveraging technologies to create new jobs in the economy. The 4th edition of the Summit brought forward international and national experts from industry, academia, multi-lateral agencies, Government as well representatives from embassies of multiple countries - Germany, UAE, Sweden.
A globally competitive Indian manufacturing sector will be a key enabler in achieving the Hon’ble Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi’s vision of a USD 5 trillion-dollar economy by 2025. Known to have the largest multiplier effect on economy, the Indian manufacturing sector’s participation across global value chains needs to scale from its current level of 2-3% of merchandize exports to that of comparable manufacturing superpowers like USA, China, Germany, Korea etc and smart manufacturing will be a critical ingredient in achieving these aspirations.

Addressing the Summit, His Excellency Dr Martin Ney, Ambassador of Federal Republic of Germany said that digitalization and manufacturing means modelling products with software rather than hardware, manufacturing more variants on the same assembly line, embracing new business models and creation jobs that were unheard of earlier.

Dr Vandana Kumar, Joint Secretary, Department of Industrial Policy and Promotion (DIPP) mentioned that industry must become cognizant of on-going mega trends which are in the form of new technologies, business models and threats. These trends are shaping the manufacturing around the world. She further added that technology will be an integral part of the new industrial policy that DIPP is working on.

Talking about NITI Aayog’s initiatives, Ms Anna Roy, Advisor, NITI Aayog proposed for a sector wise approach for smart manufacturing and mentioned that GoI is looking to develop plug and play infrastructure where companies could benefit from already established facilities, testing labs and access to new technologies.

Dr Nobert GausExecutive VP and Head - R&D in Digitalization and Automation, Siemens AG and Representative, Platform Industrie 4.0, Germany showcased how digitalization is changing everything from products to value chains to society. He also mentioned about the importance of prioritizing cybersecurity and putting in place rules to ensure safe data sharing between systems. Also representing Platform Industrie 4.0, Germany, Dr Gaus stressed on the need for Indo-German partnership through an India Industry 4.0 Platform.

Mr Chandrajit BanerjeeDirector, General, CII emphasized the need for Government and industry to come together and adopt the P E T formula - People, Enablement and Technology. He further added that up-skilling and re-skilling of labour will be critical in ensuring that smart manufacturing will become a success.

Announcing the launch of the CII portal www.ciismart.in, which brings forward case studies of more than 25 companies from across the country that have experienced an effective increase of 20-30% in their productivity by deploying smart manufacturing, Mr Sunil Mathur, Chairman, CII Smart Manufacturing Council and CEO & MD, Siemens Ltd., India spoke about Industry 4.0 being an enabler for SMEs in broadening their offerings using already available resources. An MoU between CII and ZonesCorp UAE towards future collaborations on manufacturing was also signed at Summit.
