Bangalore 16th November, 2016: The Canadian International School hosted a charity run to raise money for Cancer Research in association with the Terry Fox Foundation today with the run commencing and finishing at the Canadian International School premises. The Terry Fox Run is an annual non-competitive charity event held in numerous regions around the world in commemoration of Canadian cancer activist Terry Fox, and his Marathon of Hope to raise money for cancer research. The run was flagged off by the Consulate General of Canada, Jennifer Daubeny, and involved a 5K run around the campus with over 800 students and 100 members of the public joining the run.
In memory of a young hero who fought cancer, and helped others along the way, the Terry Fox’s motive behind the run has been an inspiration to many to raise money for the cancer research. Since it’s inception over 35 years ago, the cause has raised nearly 2.3 of a billion canadian dollars for cancer research and there has been no looking back since. Speaking at the event, “theConsulate General mentioned “The Terry Fox Run was a property started in Canada, and has been around for over 20 years now. It is a pleasure to see this being incorporated here and the money raised to aid in cancer research being shared with the Terry Fox Foundation”. Shweta Sastri the Executive Director of the school said “It has been our honour to have hosted the Terry Fox Run all these years raising money for cancer research. The Terry Fox Foundation conducts amazing work to further the fight against cancer and the Canadian International is proud to be associated with it. Today's run was a great success!.”
The charity run was open to students, teachers from schools and all Bangaloreans and aims to raise money for the cancer research. Participants walked, jogged and ran at their own pace. The entire proceeds will be sent to the Terry Fox Foundation.
About Terry Fox
Terry Fox, an active teenager involved in many sports was only 18 years old when he was diagnosed with osteogenic sarcoma (bone cancer) and forced to have his right leg amputated 15 centimetres (six inches) above the knee in 1977. While in hospital, Terry was so overcome by the suffering of other cancer patients, many of them young children that he decided to run across Canada to raise money for cancer research. Terry started his run in St. John’s, Newfoundland on April 12, 1980 with little fanfare. Although it was difficult to garner attention in the beginning, enthusiasm soon grew, and the money collected along his route began to mount. He ran close to 42 kilometres (26 miles) a day through Canada and the Atlantic Provinces, Quebec and Ontario. However, on September 1st, after 143 days and 5,373 kilometres (3,339 miles), Terry was forced to stop running outside of Thunder Bay, Ontario because cancer had appeared in his lungs. Terry passed away on June 28, 1981 at the age 22. The heroic Canadian was gone, but his legacy was just beginning. To date, over $600 million has been raised worldwide for cancer research in Terry’s name through the annual Terry Fox Run, held across Canada and around the world.
