Mumbai October 13, 2015The American Society of Safety Engineers (ASSE) aims to create safer work environment by preventing workplace fatalities, injuries and illnesses around the globe. ASSE advocates for Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) of professionals through proactive government and international affairs and member-led relationships with key safety and health agencies. With an objective to bring OSH onto the forefront in India as well, ASSE today announced that its flagship conference - Safety India 2015 - will be held at The Lalit, Mumbai from October 15th to 17th, 2015. The conference will be inaugurated by Mr. YS Chowdary, Honorable Minister of State for Science & Technology & Earth Sciences, Government of India. Safety India 2015 is expected to attract hundreds of participants from India and some from Asia, North America and Europe.

Occupational Safety and Health is imperative for all organizations irrespective of the industry as workplace accidents not only cause damage to the health and lives of the employees but also hamper the productivity and reputation of the organization. Bringing this critical aspect into mainstream discussion, Safety India 2015 will enable detailed discussions on important topics like Understanding Human Error, OSH Management & Emerging Trends in 2015, Injury Prevention through Visualizing the Hazard Analysis and Risk Control, updates on ISO 45001 standard on Safety Management Systems and its implications, Gold Standard for Risk Management - ISO 31000ILO, Sustainable Safety Management, Significance of Incidence Reporting, Methodology for Incident Investigation to name a few.

The 3 day conference that includes a technical workshop on global safety certifications (CSP and ASP) will witness insightful talks and sessions by eminent industry experts including Mr. Rixio Medina, CSP,USA ASSE Ambassador, Dr. R. K. Elangovan, Deputy Director General, DGFASLI, Ministry of Labour and Employment, Govt. of India, Mr. Sushil Kumar, President - GMS, Reliance Industries Limited, Ms. Teresa M. While sharing the details of Safety India 2015 Mr. Michael Belcher, President – ASSE said, “According to a report by ILO in 2008, around 403,000 people die in India every year due to work induced illness or injury. Though the local industry has been taking efforts to enhance the safety measures, we believe there is still significant work that needs to be done in India to ensure safety of the workers. Through Safety India 2015 we are aiming to acquaint the Indian industry with the global best practices which have been implemented and have resulted in creating safer workplaces.”

In a country like India which adds a million people every month to its workforce, Occupational Safety and Health has to be the prime consideration of any organization. In fact, now under the ‘Make In India’ initiative, more local jobs are expected to be created and it will be employer’s  responsibility to ensure safer work environment for its employees,” added Mr. Suresh P. Tanwar, Chief - Group Safety & Health, Tata Group and the Conference Chair.

The two-day professional development conference and exposition runs on October 15-16 at The Lalit Hotel, Mumbai, followed by one-day workshop on Certified Safety Professional (CSP)/ Associate Safety Professional (ASP) Certifications. This event will attract safety practitioners across industries including manufacturing, construction, oil and gas, automotive, IT, biotechnology and many others.

ASSE opened its first India chapter in March 2012. Since then, membership has grown significantly with the addition of three new chapters in Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh and Telangana. ASSE’s first professional development conference, Safety India 2014, took place in Chennai in May 2014.
