About the organization

MBA (Mutually Beneficial Activities) Foundation was started by a group of parents, in December 2001, focusing initially to

  • Provide Sheltered Day Care Services For Adult Persons With Disabilities, Unable to Find Gainful Occupation In Mainstream Or Self-Employment.
  • Lifelong Residential Care After The Parents Demise

Besides appropriate assessment, counseling (for parents and their wards) and therapy (speech, occupational, physiotherapy and psychotherapy), these youngsters are given training as per their ability to learn, and a sheltered atmosphere to make and pack simple products of daily use. They are given a stipend allowance for their contribution to production, leading to a life with dignity.

Lifelong residential life care services started from 2003 for the needy, where the beneficiaries were given services such as living, hygiene care, food, medication, etc. in addition to the day care activities as mentioned above. Admission is on all 12 months of the year.

In brief MBA Foundation is working for Total Rehabilitation, with personal and medical care, Trainings and Development, Vocational Activities, Therapy, Yoga and Meditation, Fellowship and Friendship, Hobbies, Entertainment and Relaxation and also residential facilities for those who need it.

We started with one centre in Chembur with seven young ladies with different types of disabilities.
Children or adults with physical disabilities like Hearing or Speech, visually, Orthopedic, Muscular Dystrophy, Polio, Cerebral Palsy, or mental disabilities like Learning Disabilities, ADHD, Dyslexia, Mental Retardation (mild, moderate, severe), Down’s Syndrome or persons with multiple disabilities are taken into the centre (either Day Care Centre or Life Care Centre) as per the need of the individual.
Presently, we have 5 centers in Mumbai out of which two centers (Powai and Gorai) are having the facility of Day Care as well as Life Care Centers (including permanent care of the persons with disability). Three centers at Chembur, Thane and Ambernath are Day Care Centers and we also have an Auxiliary Centre is running at SEC Day School, Antop Hill.
General procedure for selecting a Child / Adult for the Centre (Day Care and or Life Care)

  1. Assessment of the Child / Adult to help us know the strength and weakness, to know the relevant stage of rehabilitation activity and to develop a plan of action.
  2. Complete case history is taken to know the profile of the candidate and family, medical condition, area of disability, therapy requirement self help skills etc.
  3. Education level and Ability skill profile
  4. Area of interest and work experience, if any
  5. Languages known and Hobbies
  6. Detail assessment by occupational / speech/ physio and psycho therapist is undertaken to know the motor, visual motor coordination, speech and hearing comprehension, perceptual and psychological profiles.

Classification and Action Plan
After Selection we classify them into three categories i.e. Educable, Trainable and Others and depending on the need an action plan is developed for Adults as well as Children.
In the last 13 years, we have evolved the following modules for persons with disabilities, in our care centres, as per the local community needs.

In the Early Intervention group, children (1 to 10 years) are given therapy, special education, etc., as per their assessment needs. They are trained on a one to one basis and made ready for schooling. Last year, 3 children have been integrated in the regular schools after being trained and educated in the early childhood intervention for 3 years

Pre-vocational Training and National open school facilitation. Children in the age group of 11 to 17 years, who cannot attend regular school or due to inability in progressing in academics, are admitted in Pre-vocational Training group. These adolescents are prepared for their future with minimum functional academics and training with necessary developmental skills, attention span enhancement, group and individual therapy, etc. Children who are interested are prepared for SSC / HSC under National Open School.
Children in this group is prepared for moving into formal Vocational Training and or join NIOS to complete school finals and look for opportunities in any employment.

About 175 Youngsters (above 18 years) has under gone Vocational training in various making and packing of user friendly products. Out of this 125 are placed in our own centre helping in making value adding products like, cleaning items, fancy art and craft items, stitched items and condiments. They all earn a stipend for their contribution and also avail therapy, yoga and relaxation services. A few others have moved out of Mumbai; some were able to work in family business; few of them left for good as they were growing older.
75 educated youngsters have been placed in good jobs after a course of 6 months of training in Executive Development and Training Program and are absorbed in good companies like TCS, ADFC, AurionPro, Deutshe Bank (back office), Satveeka Trading Company, and others in the field of Hospitality, Trading, Accounting, IT and others. Most of them have been able to get settled in life with economic independence, marriage and children.

For severely disabled Training in activities of daily living is given to make then ready for the activities of daily living and becoming independent to manage most of one’s own requirements like dressing, bathing, eating, and other outdoor activities, as per the individual capacity.

A number of avenues is provided for about 200 trainees (children and adults) with different types and levels of disabilities on a regular basis; and more than 1500 people have, so far, benefitted with assessment, therapy, counseling, referrals, placement in good jobs, etc.

130 youngsters with varied levels and types of disabilities (mentally challenged, visually impaired, hearing and speech impaired, spasticity, multiply disabled, etc.,) have been trained to do a variety of jobs, as per their capability and they are kept occupied in our sheltered workshops during the day time making products like fancy paper bags, gift envelopes, torans, stitched materials like bags, aprons, candles, biscuits, and services in back office like, Xerox copying, laminating, binding, etc. They are paid a stipend for their contribution towards production, which is the beginning towards A LIFE WITH SELF ESTEEM and DIGNITY.
30 youngsters, with varying disabilities, have been accommodated permanently as life care beneficiaries in the residential facility in Powai (for girls) and Gorai (for boys). These youngsters either have no parents or parents who are old and sick and cannot take care of them. This facility also includes the other day care occupation, relaxation, therapy activities as well to keep them happy, and healthy with occupation.

Construction of GODS’ Abode
An Integrated Rehabilitation Centre for the Disabled
Background of the project

With nearly 8 crores of people with disabilities in India, there are very few rehabilitation facilities available. In the last 13 years, we have witnessed the demand for vocational training, occupation and life-long care rising steadily. With the family background moving from joint family system to nuclear family setup and more siblings are moving abroad, parents have anybody to take care of their children when they grow old, when they are unwell or when they are no more.

Presently Thirty youngsters, with varying disabilities, have been accommodated permanently as life care beneficiaries in the residential facility in Powai (girls) and Gorai (boys). These youngsters either have no parents or parents who are old and sick and cannot take care of their wards' needs. At present, we are able to provide these facilities in a very limited space.

We have created models of residential life-long care centers in Powai and Gorai but have very limited space. In order to scale this facility for more deserving people and to provide them with integrated rehabilitation services like ( training, therapy, counseling, living, occupation and care), we urgently need to have a centre like Gods Abode, which will have more space for living ( for about 45-50 people) and all the rehabilitation services (for about 300 to 500 people).
We also plan to reach out to the rural areas where no such facilities are available. We need to do this by going to the rural areas around Mumbai and surveying or getting data on people with disabilities and services for them, if any; wherever we find the need, getting groups of parents or community workers to our centre, provide them with living facility and train them on the RCI guidelines, so that they can be helped to start centres in their respective locations with our technical support to help the local people who need these services.
In order to scale this facility for more deserving people we need larger space. We propose to construct a four storey building (approx. 8000 sq. feet carpet area) disable friendly integrating care and services for the inmates Life Care as well as a Day Care Center reaching out to the people living in nearby rural areas. This center will be a replication of our model center with all the required adaptations and facilities required for their progress

Need for Constructing GODS Abode

  • Major concern of parents with disabled children is that who will take care of their children after their death?
  • Who will provide the necessary facilities which they require lifelong for their daily and fruitful living?
  • What if the parents are sick and cannot attend to the special needs of their children?
  • What if parents are from under privileged background and cannot afford the services?

Main Features of the centre

  • Adults having any kind of physical disability, mental disability or persons with multiple disabilities can come and stay together. The center will be disabled friendly where disabled people of different kinds can move around freely and involve in their routine activities with ease and comfort.
  • Total Rehabilitation, with personal and medical care, Training and Development, Vocational Activities, Therapy, Yoga and Meditation, Fellowship and Friendship, Hobbies, Entertainment and Relaxation and also Residential facilities for those who need it is planned under one roof.
  • Care of disabled people will be taken if they have no parents or parents who are old and sick and cannot take care of their wards' needs or people coming from economically and socially underprivileged background.
  • The integrated rehabilitation center will assess the need of each and every individual and chalk out a plan of action for their daily living and involve then in the activities which are fruitful as per the need and capacities of the individual. This center will have all the facilities for daily living and services like speech therapy, occupational therapy, physiotherapy, psychotherapy, counseling, and pre vocational and vocational training under one roof.
  • The people residing in this center will be taken care till the end of their life. The center will also address the paramedical and medical needs of every individual residing in the center.
  • To educate and to train them so that they can live with self esteem and dignity and to become contributing citizens to the family and also to the society.

There are limited or no such facilities presently available in and around Mumbai which will provide all the life and day care and facilities under one roof for varying disabilities. Disabled people in this center will give them the opportunity to help and interact with each other by compensating the needs of each other. This would also help people like us to know and learn more about them.

If the initiatives are not taken by NGO’s, Private sectors and Government bodies’ persons with disabilities will have no direction to help and develop their children with the much needed facilities for a fruitful living. This also helps the nation by making the disabled people contributing citizens rather than a burden to parents and the society as a whole.

Objectives of  GODS Abode
  • “Reaching Out” to many more needy beneficiaries, especially with Residential Life-long Care along with Integrated Rehabilitation Facilities. This would give them an opportunity to live Self Esteem and Dignity.
  • Building awareness in the rural areas through regular community awareness and training programs for parents, community workers, and volunteers with a long term objective of replicating this model in as many needy areas as possible.

Services at GODS’ Abode
  • Residential Life Care Centre and Day Care Centre
  • Assessment, counseling and drawing out individual action plan
  • Therapies (occupational, physio, psycho, speech,) etc.
  • Facilitation for children with special needs for schooling
  • Facilitation to complete school final for drop outs through  NIOS coaching
  • Executive development and training for educated persons  for good job placement
  • Pre vocational (12 to 17 years) and vocational skills training (18 years and above)
  • Sheltered work centers for occupation with value adding activities
  • Group therapy through sports, music, dance, bhajans, meditation, celebrations etc.
  • Other activities like training the trainers, awareness programs and social marketing
  • Specialty centre for disabilities – medical and paramedical – aids and adaptations, etc
  • Research centre in all aspects of disabilities - Documentation of case studies, internal and external, maintaining a reference centre and publishing various articles in news paper, magazines periodically, organizing conventions and workshops, etc.
  • Activities in the area of gardening, floriculture, horticulture, etc.
  • Gods’ self employment plaza, etc.

Beneficiaries of the Center

Our Primary Beneficiaries will be persons with any type of disability who will benefit through our intervention program. Persons with severe disabilities and multiple disabilities who don’t have people to attend to their special needs of daily living such as hygiene and health care at home will also benefit from our services. In future, we estimate providing services to 45 to 50 life care beneficiaries and around 300 to 500 day care beneficiaries during the initial two to three years.

We expect to reach out to around 15 rural locations (in the first 2 years) in addition to the direct involvement with the beneficiaries. Much awareness needs to be made in the community by creating awareness and community involvement is needed to build a strong support system for the parents of the disabled. This would help the family as well as the disabled children to get integrated in the family as well as in the society.

Risk: Time overrun, cost overrun, material overrun if any could cause delay in the construction process. But so far during Feb, 2014 to June, 2015 the progress is as per schedule.

Sustainability of the project
Any project of this nature is highly value adding in nature, especially to this marginalized group (persons with disabilities) and as such would require hand holding support in the initial stages from well-wishers and philanthropists. Efforts will be on to invite more donors to help complete the project on time to enhance its service package. Local government, international funding agencies, etc. will also be contacted for support. Material suppliers will also be contacted to help with free / discounted priced materials.
