Story Telling Art from India- Kaavad

Event: Story Telling Art from India- Kaavad
Talk, Exhibition & Sale

Date:  16th January, 2015
Time: 4 pm to 6 pm
Dr. Nina Sabnani

On Offer:  The Kaavad storytelling of Rajasthan is an intriguing oral tradition of the regions of Mewar and Marwar. A portable, painted, wooden shrine, it is made by the Kaavad makers (Basayati Suthars) of Bassi, Chittor, for the storytellers (Kaavadiya Bhats or Ravs) of Marwar.  The storytellers unfold the multiple panels of the Kaavad as they recite stories and genealogies of their patrons spread across Rajasthan and adjoining states. The panels have painted figures of Gods, saints, local heroes as well as the patrons who commission images of themselves or their dear and departed ones on the Kaavad panels.

Today, these shrines are viewed as illustrated artifacts. They are something that can be displayed beautifully and have a story to tell. These shrines will be on display and sale at baaya during the event. The storytellers will be present  to recite the narratives along with the kaavad artists. On sale will be kaavads, other story telling art forms and books on the subject.

Dr. Nina Sabnani, Professor, IDC, IIT Bombay, is an artist and storyteller who uses film, illustration and writing to tell her stories. She will share and present her insights on the Kaavad tradition over a relaxed afternoon of champagne and snacks at Baaya. Based on her doctoral thesis, she has also authored a book on the Kaavad tradition titled ‘The Kaavad Tradition of Rajasthan: a portable pilgrimage’. The book will be available for sale, signed by her personally. Visitors can also enjoy some reflexology treatments while they are here.

This is an event that should not be missed by anyone who is fascinated by India’s traditions, stories and culture. It is not often that one can view such an art form along with the scholarly insights provided by Dr. Sabnani.

Baaya will collaborate with Heaven on Earth Spa and Zen Café who will provide spa services, goodies and snacks for the event.
