Dr Mansukh Mandaviya inaugurates 51 greenfield projects under PLI scheme for Bulk Drugs and Medical Devices


 


 

Production of Penicillin G to start in India from June this year: Mansukh Mandaviya

 

 

NEW DELHI, 02 March 2024: Dr Mansukh Mandaviya, Minister of Chemicals & Fertilizers and Health & Family Welfare, Govt of India today inaugurated 51 projects under PLI scheme for bulk drugs and medical devices.

 

Addressing the inaugural program of ‘Greenfield Projects under PLI Scheme for Bulk Drugs and Medical Devices’, organized by FICCI, jointly with the Department of Pharmaceuticals, Dr Mandaviya said that bulk drugs and medicines are critical requirements of India, and they must be manufactured in the country. Atmanirbhar Bharat means to ensure that nation’s critical requirements are not import dependent and should be produced in India only.

 

“Now, after the inauguration of greenfield projects under the PLI scheme for bulk drugs and medical devices, I am confident that India has taken one more step forward towards achieving Atmanirbhar Bharat,” Dr Mandaviya added.

 

The Minister further added that the government, after a long gap, is planning to roll-out the production of Penicillin G by June this year. “After a gap of 30 years, we will start the API production for Penicillin G. The success of PLI scheme is visible and it is the intent of the government to formulate a long-term and transparent policies,” emphasized Dr Mandaviya.

 

Dr Arunish Chawla, Secretary, Department of Pharmaceuticals, Ministry of Chemicals & Fertilizers, Govt of India stated that the drugs and pharmaceuticals industry in India was Rs 2.4 lakh crore in 2013-14 and it has today reached to Rs 6 lakh crores in 2021-22 with a CAGR of 12 per cent over the last 10 years. “India is the leader in generic pharmacy across the world and the purpose of PLI Scheme is to increase value addition in country along with diversify our value chains to high value products which are futuristic,” he added.

 

Mr Rajesh Kumar Singh, Secretary, DPIIT, Ministry of Commerce and Industry, Govt of India said that under the PLI scheme, the government allocated around $26 billion in 10 different departments and under 14 sectors of the economy across 10 different departments. “The primary objective is to kickstart investment, boost sales, generate employment, and create national and global champions among business leaders,” he added.

 

Mr SK Pathak, Secretary General, FICCI said industries are partners in the growth story of our country. The success of the PLI scheme has been conclusively proven. With everyone's efforts, ‘Viksit Bharat’ will be a reality by 2047, he noted.
