Mumbai, July 23, 2015 – Florida International University (FIU) is celebrating its 50th anniversary and to mark the occasion, the institution has continued its commitment to providing high achieving students the opportunity to receive a top-quality education. FIU will invest in its top students by offering $1.5 Million annually in renewable premiere scholarships and other merit awards to educate the world’s future leaders.
One of the newest recipients of FIU’s commitment to international education is Bhavyta Chauhan. Bhavyta has followed in her sister’s, Geeticka Chauhan, footsteps by receiving FIU’s most prestigious scholarship, the Presidential Scholarship. The Presidential Scholarship is a full-tuition scholarship valued at approximately $80,000 and provides high achieving students access to top-quality education at the selective state institution, located in Miami Florida.
The Indian sisters, Geeticka and Bhavyta Chauhan, both graduated from DPS R K Puram in New Delhi, are pursuing Bachelors of Science in Computer Science. Geeticka Chauhan first learned about FIU from a university admissions counselor and her subsequent research on the College of Engineering and Computing. The top-tier state research university, FIU, met all her selection criteria. Geeticka explains, “I love how international the school is and the warm and welcoming environment. The computer science department is really good with many hardworking students and faculty. Many options for undergraduate research are available which adds to the students' experience in the field.” As a result of her academic merit in high school and SAT test scores, Geeticka was awarded the prestigious Presidential Scholarship. Just two years later Geeticka’s younger sister, Bhavyta, was awarded the same highly selective scholarship. The Presidential Scholarship, FIU’s most prestigious undergraduate merit award, is highly competitive, making the Chauhan sisters’ accomplishment very unique.
Bhavyta’s decision to attend FIU was easier due to her sister’s experience, “Geeticka spoke very highly about the professors, and enjoyed all her classes, finally getting the chance to pursue what she truly loved doing.” Bhavyta added, “In the past two years, I have really seen Geeticka grow and build a positive personality, and though I know my experience at FIU will be different from her’s, I am really hoping for the same kind of positive growth in my personality.”
FIU invests in India through collaborative research efforts amongst its faculty, international agreements for student exchange and dual degree programs as well as providing students with information on U.S. higher education and the opportunities offered at FIU.
Indian students are amongst the top five countries represented at FIU with more than 200 Indian students presently in degree-seeking programs. Each year the university receives thousands of applications from interested students around the world.
Sarah Noppen, Associate Director for International Recruitment in the Office of Undergraduate Admissions, will be traveling throughout India to meet with students and provide them information on the scholarship and the over 200 degree programs in an effort to increase the number of India students studying at FIU. She will be visiting high schools in New Delhi, Jaipur, Nagpur, Indore, Mussoorie, Dehradun, Ahmedabad and Mumbai to meet with students interested in pursuing higher education in USA.
Ms. Noppen spends time each year in India speaking with interested students. She explains, “Indian students are studious and fantastic additions to the university as a whole, as they aid in diversifying the classroom and are very active in student clubs, research, community service outreach and university life. These qualities and those taught in many classrooms throughout India, exemplify the core mission and outcomes we seek for students at FIU.” She will be available to meet interested undergraduate students at USIEF Office (http://www.usief.org.in/ Mumbai.aspx) on Saturday, July 25 at 11:00am.
FIU has become a leading comprehensive research university with more than 200 bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral programs, including the international business program currently ranked 8th by U.S. News & World Report. To uphold its commitment to learning, research, entrepreneurship, innovation, and creativity, FIU aims to prepare graduates to succeed in a global market.
