Liberty Videocon - MSLTA join hands to boost club level Tennis in Maharashtra

Mumbai, January 24th, 2014:  In one of the first of its kind for tennis in India, Liberty Videocon General Insurance (Liberty Videocon) and Maharashtra State Lawn Tennis Association (MSLTA) have joined hands to introduce Interclub Tennis Championship across Maharashtra. This is for the first time in the country that such an interclub tennis tournament will receive a major boost.

Mr. Sharad Kannamwar, President of MSLTA added that “Internationally many sports, including Football, Basketball, Hockey, Cricket etc. have become popular by organizing InterClub tournaments. Through this initiative, we want to further promote Tennis in entire Maharashtra and provide a platform to the tennis playing community. Our goal has always been to spread tennis across various age groups and we will continue to encourage people to take up tennis as a major sporting option”.

The Liberty Videocon – MSLTA Interclub Championship will be spread over 30 cities and district headquarters across Maharashtra and a staggering 200+ clubs are expected to participate in this competition. Participants aged 25 years and above will be able to qualify for this tournament. Apart from that, the tournament is also open to senior citizens who are actively playing tennis in their respective clubs informed Mr. Bharat Oza, Hon Secretary of MSLTA.

The event will be played in three tiers. The first tier is city level and the winners from the city level will move to zonal championships across Mumbai, Navi Mumbai, Nashik, Nagpur, Solapur, Kolhapur and Aurangabad. The zonal champions will then play the state Inter club Championship finals at Mumbai.  The winner of the event will be given Rs 2 lakhs, while the runners-up will get Rs 1 lakh.

About MSLTA

Maharashtra State Lawn Tennis Association (MSLTA) is registered under the Societies Registration Act 1860. It has its members, with voting rights, various Clubs and District Tennis Associations. It also has members without voting rights, Corporate Bodies, any apex body of educational institution, university or institution recognized by Government or by Semi-Government.

Representatives of these bodies in Maharashtra make up the Central Council. At present MSLTA has 47 voting and 22 non-voting members. The Maharashtra State Lawn Tennis Association is the sole controlling and Governing body of the game of Tennis in Maharashtra.
