Bengaluru, 24th July 2015: ConvaTec, a leading global medical technology
company, organized a special stoma care camp in Bangalore for ostomy patients as
part of its social awareness and health check up initiatives.
In association with Dr.
Nagabhushan, Consultant Gastroenterologist & Colorectal Surgeon convener of
the camp, where over 20 stoma patients from across the country were examined
for a comprehensive free stoma care checkup. It also included a discussion
about the newer techniques in stoma care for enhancing the quality of life of a
patient and addressing lifestyle challenges.
The objective of this camp was to provide guidance to the
patients on newer and affordable techniques for stoma care that will aid them
in leading a life with confidence.
Dr. Nagabhushan shared his experience, “Studies of patients reveal that
many patients go through the psychological adaptation differently but some of
the common reactions are - concerns about a negative body image, anxiety to
take care of the stoma, and worries about how the stoma will affect their
relationships and social life. Such health camps play an important role of
educating and counseling the patients with compassion.”
The patients were counseled about optimal skin care,
dietary regimen and assistance with changing the ostomy appliance.
One of the patients who was profoundly touched by the camp,
Kamlakar Naidu, Urostomy patient said,
“It is a great initiative organized by ConvaTec which helped us to better
understand the precautions that need to be taken post stoma surgery. Such camps
help us to express our concerns, which are otherwise difficult to share even
with family and friends. This knowledge session was immensely beneficial and
will definitely help all of us to improve the quality of our lives.”
The camp included examination of skin and stoma conditions that
was followed by the consultation. During the session, Dr. Nagabhushan mentioned
that the cases of ostomy in India are growing and it affects more than 25,000
patients a year. He also discussed about some of the causes of stoma that are
ostomy, gastrointestinal complications, cancer, urological disorders and
radical cystectomy.
With this initiative, ConvaTec has taken a step towards
helping patients lead a healthy life by organizing such stoma camps in metros
and tier 1 & tier 2 cities across the country.
