4th February 2014; Mumbai: On the occasion of World Cancer Day
bollywood star Jackie Shroff was present
at Azad Maidan to spread awareness on Breast Cancer with a women's football
tournament. Riso Cancer Awareness Cup was held today at MSSA Ground, Azad
Maidan and saw participation from over 400 women.
The Riso Cancer Awareness Cup saw
one of the biggest event held in Mumbai today. The event started with a silent
rally from Azad Maidan to Churchgate station, where volunteers were dressed in
pink t-shirts and pinned up a pink ribbon which is also a universal symbol of
Breast Cancer. Over 40 teams of different age groups played in the tournament.
With other dignitaries like Shahid Mallya, Bollywood singer who performed on
his upcoming track from Gunday and other Zoomba performances, the highlight of
the event was Jackie Shroff who was present at the ground for a brief period.
With innumerable memories attached to South Mumbai, Shroff chose to stay away
from the crowd and watched young women footballers with keen interest in the
game.
"Breast Cancer is the most
common type of cancer found in women. Statistics say that 1 in 8 women will be
detected with Breast Cancer. We wanted to create some event where we could
educate young girls on Breast Cancer but entertain them as well at the same
time. We found that staying fit was one of the best way in which Breast Cancer
could be prevented. So we decided to host this football tournament and we
received amazing response and feedback" said Vinay Maurya, Organiser of
the event. "We strategized this event and executed the event within 20
days." he added.
Along with Jackie Shroff, other
doctors from Jupiter Hospital and Jaslok hospital gave a brief speech on causes
and prevention of Breast Cancer. The Bandra Packers won the winners trophy in
the senior category, while St. Augustine were declared as the winners in the
junior category after an interesting match.
