Recovery from one of the most complicated conditions- thanks to advanced technology and a team of experts
Mumbai: Rutik Mane, merely 18 years old child was diagnosed with a disease known as Sickle Cell Hemoglobinpathy (SCH), as a result of which he had developed hip arthritis. SCH is caused by a genetic abnormality in the gene for hemoglobin, which leads to the production of sickle hemoglobin. The sickle gene is widespread among many tribal population residing in the border of Rajasthan and Maharashtra owing to their genetic disadvantage and their families who lack access to quality care as well as social and genetic counseling support to make informed choices for reproduction to have healthy children.
When oxygen is released from sickle hemoglobin, it sticks together and forms long rods, which damages and changes the shape of the red blood cells. The condition can cause fatigue, severe pain, organ damage, stroke, and even death.
Rutik, whose parents were both Sickle cell positive, faced difficulty due to this disease since four years and was unable to even sit or squat. In Rutik’s condition, the shape of the red blood cells changed to the shape of a sickle and the blood cells got entangled in the blood vessels of the hip due to which, the sickle shaped cells slowly stopped the blood supply to the head of the hip joint. Since the continuous blood supply did not take place, the socket inside the hip joint was damaged and resulted in difficulty to walk. This condition usually occurs in people between the age of 20, 30 & 40, but in this case it unfortunately occurred at a very early age. It was only when, Rutik experienced frequent and severe pain in the arms, legs, back and stomach, that his parents decided that their kid needs to undergo a surgery.
When Rutik met Dr. Satish for the first time, he was not able to stand and with each passing day he faced increased difficulty and pain. The doctor diagnosed that Rutik’s left hip joint was completely damaged and decided to initiate an immediate operation. Post a thorough planning of entire operation with the team at Apollo Spectra, he underwent a hip replacement surgery. The doctors managed blood transfusion during the procedure to ensure minimal complications during the surgery and it was successful operation that was effective completed within 2 hours time.
Rutik today has shown commendable progress and is ready to go to school like any other regular child. The parents are in high spirits about their child’s recovery after the complicated surgery where the doctor’s had informed them to be prepared for the worse. Rutik’s journey of overcoming the complications that can arise due to his disease has just begun. He has a long journey ahead before he achieves his goal, but with regular medications and his family’s steady support he is bound to cross the hurdles with flying colors.
Dr.Satish Puranik Consultant Orthopedic Surgeon at Apollo Spectra Hospitals, Chembur, has been extensively operating patients suffering from Sickle cell disease. “Operating on Rutik, was definitely one of the most challenging surgeries in my career as he is a young child, who has his whole life ahead of him. The whole team at Apollo Spectra was extremely cautious at every step taken for this case. The multidisciplinary expertise, immense planning, pre-operative treatment and pain management after the operation has resulted in successful recovery of the patient.”
