Students Top A Multi-Million Dollar Simulated Business Challenge

One among its many unique
pedagogic approaches in building business leaders for tomorrow, IMT Hyderabad
offers Capstone® – a simulated business environment challenge. Capstone® is a
renowned worldwide business challenge which is a part of the Strategic
Management course at the institute. The challenge is a part of the curriculum
in which the simulation exercise is carried out in two parts – first in a group
of 5 members each, over a period of 10 days and then at an individual level as
a comprehensive 6 hour long examination. Being a part of the Strategy course,
the exercise involves implementing concepts from all the course work of the
first year to make business decisions in the areas of Marketing, Finance,
Accounting, Human Resources, Leadership and Strategy.
In the extended Spring Challenge,
1500 teams participated globally striving to establish their business acumen. This
year, 9 out of 14 registered teams from IMT Hyderabad made it to the top 300
teams and 2 of those made it to the Top 100 teams globally. Participation in
this challenge was of both types – individual and team. First year student Vivek
Singh Pandya secured the 84th position and a team of first year
students comprising Pushkar Ghatole, Hari Krishnan and Sankalp Garg secured the
97th position. Darshan Ganatra, John Epaphras, Abhishek Mukherjee
also rank among the top five teams from the institute in this challenge. Some
of the renowned institutes which participated in this challenge along with IMT
Hyderabad include University of Massachusetts, California State University,
University of North Florida, Texas A&M University, IIM-A, IIM-B, IIM
Shillong and IIM Ranchi.

As
a part of Academia:
Capsim offers academic training at three
levels: Foundation, Capstone and Comp-XM. The foundation course is available
for all the registered students. Capstone is played in teams of students from
the participating institutes. The student teams will be ranked based on the
scores of the assessment. The assessment includes implementation of concepts
from various areas of management such as – Marketing, HR, Finance, Accounting,
Leadership and Strategy. After the Capstone assessment, each student appears
for an individual comprehensive exam called Comp-XM. This is the final level of
assessment for the course. The extension of this is the Spring Challenge.
The
Capstone Spring Challenge – 2014:
It
was an extended challenge which was available for all the institutes registered
for the Capsim software usage as a part of their curriculum. The challenge was
taken up by interested students who appeared for the Foundation and Capstone simulation
assessment through their institutes. Students from IMT Hyderabad participated
in this challenge and 9 out of 14 registered teams appeared in the top 300
teams globally. Two of these teams made it to the top 100 teams. The finals
were amongst top 6 teams which qualified in this challenge. Amongst the top 6,
IIM Raipur was one of the contenders from India.
Being
a prestigious course, Capstone has some of the famous world class universities
enrolled for its exercise. A few to mention are – Texas A & M University, University
of Massachusetts, California State University and University of North Florida.
Some of the renowned Indian institutes that participated along with
IMT-Hyderabad are - IIM-A, IIM-B, IIM Shillong and IIM Ranchi.
