On Tuesday, September 16, 2014, Somaiya Vidyavihar celebrated Foundation Day to mark

 year since its inception. The chief guest for the event was the Dr. Raghuram

their 55th

Rajan, Governor, Reserve Bank of India. The day was celebrated with flavour, zest

and enthusiasm that concluded with an awards function to felicitate hard work and

commendable achievements put in by the students and faculty over the year.

The students were honoured by RBI Governor, Dr. Raghuram Rajan, who said “It’s great

to be back at university and see the wonderful innovations being done in this institute.”

He was amazed to see what the students are capable of. He further added that the role

of the university is not just to teach what to think but how to think when you leave the

university. He focused on the importance for students to ask the right questions. He added

“If you are out of the university with curiosity, it just changes you for life and this is what

keeps you continuously learning and making a contribution to the society. He expressed

his delight that students of Somaiya Vidyavihar are full of ambitions and wished them good

luck in all their endeavours, from technology to chess playing machine for blind, the car

that can climb down the stairs, medical intervention, languages and the quest to keep

alive India’s ancient language such as Sanskrit.

On the occasion Mr. Samir Somaiya, President, Somaiya Vidyavihar was overwhelmed

with emotions and filled with pride as he spoke about the wonderful achievements of the

students and faculty and mentioned foundation day as a good day to reflect where we are

and what we have achieved today. “There is no religion greater than service to humanity”

said Mr. Samir Somaiya by concluding his heartfelt speech.

Somaiya Vidyavihar encompasses 34 institutions, with more than 35,000 students and

1,400 faculty. It’s main campus is in Mumbai, but Somaiya Vidyavihar also operates six

schools in rural India. It was founded by the Shri Karamshi Jethabhai Somaiya in 1959, to

provide quality holistic education.

Somaiya Vidyavihar has always been a place with a purpose - making a positive difference

in quality of life of its students and the community. It is known as much for its science,

technology, engineering, management, social sciences and commerce programs, as for its

programs for academic studies in various faiths and cultures of India.

It was the vision of Shri K.J. Somaiya that modern professional education must remain true

learning how to make a living is not enough. That students must also be taught on what

is a life worth living. He was passionate about propagating the Sanskrit language and

the promotion of studies in ancient Indian thought and culture. He envisaged Somaiya

Vidyavihar as an institution where students and teachers would live in an intellectual and

spiritual fellowship.

Academically, Somaiya Vidyavihar’s role in promoting education comes from the belief

that education is the single most important contributor in the growth of the country and

the individual. Somaiya Vidyavihar welcomes a diverse student body of students from

across India and the world.
